Talks to further our understanding of the Mediterranean
02/12/2016
A researcher and a journalist came together on the stage of the CaixaForum Palma with a single objective: to bring science closer to society. Joaquín Tintoré and Rosa Campomar discussed some of the “Tales of the Mediterranean” such as its urgent need to receive in Atlantic waters to avoid water levels dropping by one metre a year.
The director of ICTS SOCIB encouraged the public to take a fresh look at the facts. This is what oceanographers today are trying to do, making use of oceanographic research vessels, as well as other observation platforms such as underwater gliders, drifting buoys and satellites to observe and predict the seas and oceans.
Participants had the chance to see these platforms which were on exhibit in the auditorium and learn about the possible applications and uses for the data which they obtain, such as sea rescue operations or managing environmental disasters.
The Ocean-atmosphere interaction was also not lost sight of during this talk, something which is fundamental for predicting extreme meteorological phenomena such as storm Jonas which affected the East coast of the United States last January, or phenomena such as El Niño which affect the weather on a planetary scale.
